How to take the typing speed test
- Choose a 30 or 60 second timer.
- Place the cursor in the typing box and begin copying the displayed passage. The timer starts with your first character.
- Type until the timer ends or you complete the passage.
- Review your WPM, accuracy and errors, then use Try Again for a different passage.
How WPM is calculated
A standard typing word is counted as five characters. Gross WPM is total typed characters divided by five and then divided by elapsed minutes. Net WPM adjusts that speed for detected errors. Accuracy compares correct typed characters with total typed characters.
How to read your result
Speed is most useful when accuracy stays high. Compare results taken with the same timer length and keyboard. A short test is convenient for practice; the 60 second option gives a steadier sample.
